BMBO National Championships
Posted: 17/05/15
For the first time the prestigious two-day National BMBO Championships are being held in the Midlands.
They will be held on Cannock Chase in Staffordshire which is at the heart of the Midlands and the Country. It is accessible from the M6 which itself is joined to a host of motorways heading in every direction. Cannock Chase has been used for Mountain Bike Orienteering for some 25 years and is known to be a challenge of physical and mental ability.
Saturday 27th June -
On day one will be the challenging 5 hour Championship event which will also be a round of both the Midlands MBO League and the National League. In order to allow travel from all points of the compass, registration for this first day will be a little later than usual being from 9.30am with starts from 10.00am. For those not wanting to take part in the 5 hour event there will also be a 2 hour taster event, particularly suited to beginners.
Sunday 28th June -
On day two will be the second part of the championship, a 3 hour event which will also count towards the Midlands League but not the National League.
For both championship events, each competitor will be issued with a waterproof A3 map at the highly detailed 1:25k scale, Sport Ident electronic timing will be used, and the usual selection of food and drinks will be available at the finish. BMBO are supplying a number of prizes.
As this is a two day event, Shugborough Outdoor Centre has been chosen as the venue to offer competitors the option for staying overnight with a variety of camping options, including glamping in a yurt! Also, possibly for the first time, a Saturday evening meal and Sunday breakfast will be on offer depending on take up (see below). There are several pubs nearby offering evening meals if you prefer.
This same venue is being used for the International Iron Man competition two weeks before our event, so come and make a weekend or maybe a week of it with further mountain biking on offer on the Chase in the form of the Follow the Dog and Monkey Trails plus the Stilecop downhill course if you dare.
Details of the centre can be found here
Overnight Options -
Camping and glamping options at Shugborough are in brief as follows:-
£10 per person per night for own tent, camper, caravan etc.
£75 per yurt for up to 5 people per night.
£40 per bell tent for up to 3 people per night
£10 per person for evening meals and breakfast.
Please contact their booking line - 0300 111 8030
There are a number of alternative camping establishments in the Cannock Chase area including Spring Slade Lodge 2 miles away.
Due to the extra planning and organising involved in laying on a 2 day event, the organisers have made a special request for competitors to enter early. This will guarantee them a map and maximise the number of prizes being made available by BMBO. To encourage early entry, discounts are available and entry costs have been kept to a minimum. Entry has been made available on an individual day basis for those unable to make both days.
You are encouraged to support the weekend event so that we may be given the opportunity to host it in future years.
Please see the BMBO website (www.bmbo.org.uk) for more details or to enter.
