A first timers perspective on MTBO at the recent British Champs.

" I was the one of two novices on this weekend and had a super time. I didn't borrow a map board as Nick had a spare—but will be getting a bigger version for future events!
Nick had entered the event and, as I was in Scotland with him for the week I was persuaded to have a go at orienteering on a mountain bike.
I wasn't confident as my left knee needs replacing but it was suggested that this was a way I could still enjoy orienteering without further damage. And it was!! Doubting my fitness, I only entered the sprint and the middle but successfully completed each and, in navigational terms, did not make any major bodges. The courses were amazingly well planned and allowed me to experience the whole gamut of wide forest trails and one-way, root-ridden, single track.
I felt somewhat guilty that someone had had to plan a novice course just for me (& one other entrant on the sprint) and am extremely grateful for the time spent by the planners.
My major surprise was how few the competitors were at the events. It really is such a fabulous sport for all who enjoy sprint orienteering and own a mountain bike and I would encourage people to give it a go. Both organisers and competitors were extremely friendly and supportive, and I hope to be able to take part in future events.
Best wishes and thank you so much to all who made my first foray into MTBO such a fantastic experience.

There are a number of events in the planning stages including the World Masters Championship in 2026. Events are open to all abilities including championship events. They cater for all. Keep a look out on the calendar and why not have a go? Helen has been converted, you may be too!
