Event Report
On Sunday 22nd September 2019 the Midland Mountain Bike Orienteering (MMBO) series was hosted at Lowsonford Village Hall in Warwickshire. The Warwickshire Wanderer event has been run from this venue a number of years ago and was a welcome addition to this year’s calendar under new management.
Whilst the area is not known for its steep climbs or technical descents, it does have some lovely trails and bridleways snaking their way around the countryside. The event covered a 140 square Kilometers with the large majority of the 27 checkpoints placed off road to make sure everyone got the chance to use the bikes for what they were intended. A clearing round would have meant a ride of 75-80 kilometers which whilst doable would have been a stretch even for the quickest competitors in the 3 hours allowed.
It was great to see our oldest competitor being in the Male 70 class and the youngest under 10 joining her dad for the day. Overall winner on the day was Will Dixon from the Men's over 21 class with a very impressive score of 411 points. Closely followed by Andy Smith and Andy Cartwright.
Unfortunately the weather broke on Saturday and we saw the first real rain for weeks, but the trails were still in pretty good conditions albeit a bit muddy and with a healthy growth of nettles and brambles.
Anyhow, despite the weather, the undergrowth and the challenges all 47 entrants enjoyed the day and the Warwickshire hospitality and hopefully will join us again next year in a slightly different corner of the county where the telegraph poles are both correctly numbered and on the right ( or is it left) side of the road and there are no tunnels.
Just a footnote to say that we generated just over £400 for Warwickshire Air Ambulance.
