Event Report
Phil Upton & Phil Botting's organiser's report
The Smisby event got off to a tricky start with BMBO website payment issues. A big thank you to
you all for your patience, you notifying me early on and most importantly turning up on the day.
Many of you have travelled from afar, hats off to you in this tougher climate.
A good turnout is very satisfying for organisers, especially now that conditions have turned
distinctly Autumnal.
We wanted to provide plenty of route choice, whilst adding to the core area to give riders variation
for those who have ridden here previously. It was pleasing to see riders heading off in different
directions, it's always frustrating when you follow another rider and can lead to mistakes as you rely
on their navigation which may throw you off course.
Providing plenty of route choice did mean having a bigger map area and maybe meant losing a bit
of map definition. Those of you who are optically challenged (like me) coupled with a bit of drizzle
may have found that challenging.
When collecting in the controls yesterday I was surprised at how much conditions had changed
from Saturday. Whether we have had more rain or it was just rider traffic I don't know, but it
seemed slower and more greasy, maybe I'm just not used to it! Judging by all of your comments this
didn't dampen your enthusiasm or put you off, in fact more satisfying after finishing. My original
thoughts of the best area for riders to head was North with the greater points on offer, but with it
being hillier and a greater proportion of off road I'm less sure on the most efficient route which is
unusual.
Congratulations to Ian Cartwright who just pipped Nuno to the winners spot and for Kevin Horsley
in 3rd place. It was great to see so many faces I've not seen for a long time for various reasons,
hopefully more frequently in 2023.
Thanks for all your generous donations at the food & refreshments desk, over £130. When
combined with the profits from the event itself the total should be near £500 which is a great
achievement and will be passed on to 2 causes close to both mine and Phil's hearts: Dementia UK &
Trussell Trust food bank.
Cheers,
Phil Upton
