Event Report
Many thanks to Ed Knight who planned a very challenging course on an area rarely used before for MBO Score. The area roughly consisted of 3 zones which explored the furthest reaches of a very large map. Right from the outset riders had to make serious decisions about which areas they may have to potentially ignore. A very different tactic to normal where riders tend to start out and see how far round they get before returning to the start. A popular route was the climb that followed the Pennine Bridleway over the shoulder of Wild Boar Fell. A 300m climb from the start line certainly put the M into MBO! Riders were rewarded with spectacular views over the Mallerstang valley and two exhilarating descents back to the valley near Kirkby Stephen. That left a bit of time to explore the area around Smardale and Crosby Garrett fells last used in the National Champs in 2021.
After 4 hours of hard work on the fells the Fat Lamb provided a welcome spot to rest, refresh and share tales of adventure.
On a disappointing note it was very sad to have to give out penalty points to a significant number of riders who used a footpath to cut off a corner and also used the A685 which was clearly marked OUT of BOUNDS on the map.
A reminder to all riders that BMBO keeps the number of rules to a minimum to retain a relaxed informal atmosphere at the events. Rules that exist are designed to promote safety, fairness and to avoid conflict with the local population upon whose land we rely on for our sport. Please stick to them.
