Event Report
Despite a gloomy forecast for Sunday the sun shone and we all stayed dry. The previous day’s rain made the going heavy in places though but there were many road options available.
Many thanks to Alan Hartley for a planning a course that visited not one but two National Parks. There cannot be many places in the country where that is possible.
Congratulations to Mike Hayward who hasn’t done an event since the days of 26” wheels and rim brakes, but armed with the latest E technology, showed that he has not lost the magic touch. Martin Edwards came out best in a close tussle with Tom Gibbs to take the best ‘man-powered bike’ position. Fiona Wright despite being blocked from going through the perfectly legal quarry route came out top of the Women. Well done to the winners and everyone else who took part.
Once again really good to see 6 new riders having their first go at MBO Score. Keep spreading the word. Anyone trying their first event can get a free entry.
The full results can be seen on the BMBO website while the series placing can be viewed by clicking this link Your best 5 scores at the end of the season could be enough to win you a prize from Wheelbase in one of the categories.
Money was being raised for the school funds through the sale of sandwiches and drinks. Thanks to all who contributed and to the ladies who gave up their time to prepare them.
Alan’s planning report
This June has not been very June-like but fortunately the weather cleared just long enough to be kind to you all. I would say I booked it but if I had I would have also booked better weather for putting them out and collecting them in!
Hopefully you all enjoyed the mixture of terrain riding around Shap has to offer. The heavy rain the day before had left the fells to the West and South extra wet, but the Limestone fells to the East dried out nicely further enhancing the contrast.
I know of one rider who was confronted in the quarry works near 21. Apologies to you and anyone else who was affected. There are fingerposts all the way through there so I don't know why the worker was declaring it wasn't a public right of way. It's very unusual there is anyone there at all on a Sunday.
All the controls were visited, even the ones I thought might be unpopular. Only three of you went down the hill to #1 for a measly 10 points. I'm glad you did though as I had to go down there three times in all! #30 wasn't much more popular even for 30 points with only 6 visits; quite a climb but great views and a fun descent in either direction. Everybody managed the easy 30 points on offer at #23, I was wondering if it would catch somebody out with no time left.
The next event in the series takes us to the South of the county and an area that has not been used for some time. Tom Gibbs is our planner and he has planned a 3 1/2 hour event from Broughton in Furness. He will be taking us on an adventure around the Dunnerdale Fells. You can look forward to this on 13th July.
Note that this is a SATURDAY event.
