Event Report
After last week’s rain delay the series finally got off to a fine start in Silloth. The forecast showers did not happen, and the sun even shone for a bit, but as you a have all come to realise by now, the Solway coast is always a bit on the windy side!
Many thanks to Vicky and the staff at the Fairy Dust Emporium who made us really welcome. Those who did not stop for food afterwards missed a treat. Definitely worth a trip to Silloth.
Fairy Dust was new venue on a familiar area. Hopefully it gave many of you the opportunity to tackle parts of the map that you cannot normally reach or at least from a different direction. Alex Reed was the only one to visit all controls but incurred a few penalty points allowing Alan Hartley to take the honours. Salka Hintikka shocked herself with her fine performance and a top 4 placing. It all looks promising for a good competition this year. Don’t forget that it is three events to count and that there are some Palace Cycles vouchers to be won.
Our apologies for a couple of control issues. #9 was placed on the wrong side of the junction. Guilty! Control #22 caused a few problems. There were very few usable features that were on the map along Causeway Head and the Bridleway sign was missing. When we did a recce in winter the fence was really obvious but, as you found out, it was now fairly obscured by vegetation. Apologies for both. We must try harder.
We like to think of the ABC as a friendly series where every feels welcome. This camaraderie was shown by Cathy and Peter who spent a lot of time helping a stricken cyclist and ended up forfeiting all of their points.
The safety and wellbeing of fellow competitors is always a priority and you will be credited any time lost in the process if you stop to help. Many thanks to you both.
The Next event in the series is at the Wheatsheaf in Lorton just outside Cockermouth on 6th June. We will starting and parking in the campsite behind the pub. Please drive through the carpark carefully. Entries are open but close at midnight on Monday 4th.
