Event Report
We started on a wet and windy event that had to be postponed and in the interests of symmetry we finished on one. Fortunately we did not have to cancel this time. Normally we have a queue of people clamouring for an early start, instead this time they were sheltering in the tea room trying to put off the inevitable. This proved to be a wise choice in the end as the weather picked up and most riders stayed dried until near the end of their ride when the showers returned.
We have used well over a thousand control sites over the 11 years of the ABC and finding new challenges is becoming increasingly difficult. This year we sent the stronger riders out East beyond Caldbeck for the first time. As always at Uldale, there were numerous comments about the hills which is why this was a little shorter than most events. For some reason it doesn’t seem to put you off though!
Well done to Tom Gibbs for clearing the course and to Caitlin Pearson for a very strong ride to finish 4th on the night. As this was the final event of the series there was the matter of the prizes to sort out. Mae’s Tea Room once again provided the perfect backdrop for a prize giving with many staying on to enjoy the excellent food provided by Mark and and his team.
Many thanks have to go to the five venues who have supported us this year. Fairy Dust Emporuium, Silloth; Wheatsheaf, Lorton; Rosley Village Hall; 4Play cycles, Cockermouth and Maes Tea Room, Uldale. Please find time to return at a more leisurely pace and enjoy what they have to offer. You will assured of a good welcome.
We would also like to welcome our new sponsor for this year. Mike at Palace Cycles in Carlisle has generously donated the prize vouchers this year. Take time to visit his shop and view the range of goodies he has on offer. You never know, a new bike might just help you win a prize next year.
Finally a big well done to all of you who competed this year.Congratulations to Tom Gibbs who was the overall winner 2024. He was a worried man at times with Alex Reed pushing him hard and finishing only 3 points behind.
Fiona Wright and Salka Hintakka had a close battle all series and in the end were separated by a single point in favour of Fiona.
Similarly in the Mixed class Roger Jackson and Margaret Mackenzie held off Colin and Gillian Fell by a single point.
Ian Wood dominated in the EBike class winning all five events.
It all bodes well for some great head to head battles again next year. Well done to all. Many thanks for taking part this year. If you have any ideas or feedback on how to improve the series in the future we would love to hear from you. Ideas for new venues always welcome.
We will be making a donation to a charitable cause once we we have sorted out all the money.
We look forward to seeing you all again next year.
Our best wishes
Tony & Angela.
