Nationals weekend
What a few weeks it has been, a rush of fuel filled emotions and adrenaline. There is no feeling like it to be honest, i love organising. The expressions on peoples faces as they finish is so different and you can tell the most competitive ones a mile off.
The event area was the important thing for me, it had to have riding of all types. Gravel, grass, rough, rocky and the dreaded Tarmac. We found the area covering Buxton ideal but no venue available or suitable. The ideal site was a campsite for all with a communal area for riders/start/finish and a shower, we found Rowter farm had all these and views and surrounding tracks a plenty. We arranged a field for everyone and the planning was started.
We Decided on the map areas and work out potential 30 cp's for each day . David whyte volunteered to be day 2 and we agreed placements and cut down the map, 22 cps finalised. I took day 1 and the area had excess cp possibilities, but was whittled down to the 30. I had intended going over to New mills but it seemed that the area was way too big. We had road closures to deal with and short term roadworks to work with so wasn't plain sailing.
Apologies for the bad placement of 3 cp's over the weekend, as has been pointed out 100m is a lot when cp is in the wrong place.
The friendly nature of all riders came out and the stories flowed of 'whata coulda shoulda' stuff and turns and decisions discussed at lengths at all levels, it was good to see. Some new riders came and got absorbed to the sport, along with some returning riders from bygone events in the area. Fantastic result
On day 1
we started early and set out the tables etc with help and blank maps were put up. Food was put aside and computer sorted. The area seemed to surprise most riders, but all seemed happy after the initial questions were answered.
Start time was 09.16 as the time just flew by and i was late, but a rush of riders later and most had gone. We had the usual ditherers but all went by 10.35. We had a couple of earlys back, but some of the riders were quite late. Time management was key on the first day. To clear the course was 75-78km and 2750m climb we thought.
The best quote i can give for day 1 was from Alex Boakes;
'Well i congratulate you on finding an area with all uphills'
I am happy with that :-)
Originally the plan was that the map would not be clearable and worked on 75% cp's would be done by winner. I can tell you that Tom Gibb did all but one cp, Killian Lomas all but 2. I couldn't take it in tbh
On Day 2
Putting out of stuff was easier and the blanks were up by 07.45 and was surprising how late riders seemed to materialise to see it. A lie in after day 1 i guess...
After day 1 i had a very uneasy feeling that it would be cleared, my nerves were shot. I started taking bets with people around me the winners finishing time, 2 hrs 40 was the consensus.
I am pleased to say my honour was intact as top riders did not clear it. Original thoughts were that if riders went south of Monsal trail they would over cook it. It worked. Whilst day 2 was easier to clear it would have been circa 65km and 1750m climb.
We had a view of the return 1.5km appx from the finish line so we could see the effort all were putting in to return in time. Day 2 seemed the more difficult event in time management terms, more lates...
The feedback from all riders was very positive and complimentary. My job was done....
Bike riding is a healing hobby and those who do ride benefit from its simplicity. A good friend of mine would always say on a ride generally when i was a sweaty mess at top of a hill;
'WHAT A GOOD DAY TO BE ALIVE'
WITHOUT THE HELP FROM THE BELOW THE EVENT WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE.
Planning the nationals was done with the help of PHIL BOTTING on the pc, DAVID WHYTE and BRYAN ELSOM sorting the map area and cp put out/collecting. We had collecting in help from PAUL BOOKER, RIA MURRAY and STEVEN DAVISON.
The Food/drinks was done again by DI with the help from HELEN ROWLEY, PAULA PORTER and ANGELA BRAND BARKER
