Event Report
A superb summers day in Spring provided ideal racing conditions for the event which received almost 50 competitors. The 3 cross country courses mapped on Bill Brown's 15000 scale map provided an adequate challenge with lengths of 18.2K, 12.8K and 8.5K with a surprising amount of climb for this area. This resulted in winning times just over the hour for all three courses.
The event was organised by Jason Falconer with a small team of Wessex OC members. Jon Brooke helped place the controls, Alan Hooper and Tim Houlder provided the computing, the entire Crickmore family of Roger, Tracy, Emma and James did most other jobs with Helen and Tina assisting with course marshalling. Thanks to the nearby Silent Woman pub who provided food and toilet facilities.
Apologies from the organisers regarding the two exchanged controls 121 and 129 which caused slight delays to earlier competitors who were checking control numbers. We exchanged these in the computer to ensure that results were available... it was surprising how many people didn't check controls... they just knew they were in the correct place and punched whatever control was there. Another problem which was unexpected occurred with one competitor assuming that the competition was in "score" format and took controls in any order, he had never competed on a "cross country" event before. The only indication of the event type was on the BMBO web site which defined it as MBO and not MBO score (also the red course lines on the map of course). Perhaps we should emphasise this on the entry fliers in future.
If you want to see your split times go to the wessex-OC web site where a more comprehensive set of results are published.
