Event Report
Organiser’s comments – Howardian Hills MBO – Saturday 13th March 2010
Thanks to David Day for planning an excellent course in such beautiful countryside and the early spring weather made the day perfect. Thanks as ever to the volunteer helpers who make the event run smoothly and to Terrington Village Hall Committee for an excellent event centre. The tracks were as dry as I can ever remember despite the amount of snow that was still lying only a month ago. David had spread the controls across this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty so there was a mixture of hilly bridleways in the centre of the map then minor roads and farm tracks in the flatter land to the north and south. Riders wanting to score well were going to have to travel some distance and Andrew Windrum clocked up 90km while visiting all but 4 of the controls. Pippa Archer won M21 but was only the third highest female scorer behind Sheila Pearce in W40 with 375 points and Karen Blackburn in W60 with 352 points who was also 10th overall. Andy Conn won M40 only 11 points behind Andrew. Mike Barnard won M50 comfortably and Geoff Moorhouse was 9th overall while winning M60. The mixed groups were won by George & Karen Hamilton in X50. Richard & James Martin carried on where they left off last year winning the Generation class with 260 points but they were 28 points behind the only Youth rider – Sammy Wilson – whose report is below.
Our next event is a 3 hour MBO Score at Langdale & Broxa Forest with starts from 12-1pm on Saturday from Langdale End Village Hall (next to the Moorcock). Steve Roberts has planned an excellent course using the larger tracks in both forests – and the 4x4 vehicles no longer use this forest!!! Hopefully see you there.
Cheers
Steve
PS Don’t forget that the Driffield events have both moved to June 12th (from the 19th) and the Helmsley event in August has a 2 hour time limit instead of 3 hours.
Sammy Wilson’s Report
After spending much of the winter away from mountain biking, and perfect cycling weather forecast, I was certainly looking forward to the opening event of the NYMBO season. Steve managed to secure my report-writing services within about five minutes of me arriving at Terrington village hall, and I'm glad to take on the job for this year.
I was rather impressed with the nifty new bike numbers, so after attaching number 333 to my handlebars (and establishing that the wooden posts lining Terrington Glory's football pitch weren't really suitable for leaning a mountain bike upon) I was ready for an early start and had set off by five past eleven.
To begin with, I headed south from the start to control 18. This was vaguely familiar territory after a family walk brought me here last summer. For the next two controls, I went by road to number 23 at Bulmer before picking up 5 points at High Stittenham. This set me up for a 45-point loop through Thornton-le-Clay and Foston up to Welburn. Here I did my first real bit of off-roading to pick up the points around the side of the Castle Howard grounds.
The bridleway between control 27 and control 12 was a nightmare, not only because of the mud - 'puncture avenue' created by the clipped hedges on both sides of the narrow path must have claimed a fair few victims.
After two more controls I hit the 'busy road' for two kilometres, turned off in Appleton-le-Street onto a good track that started off quite a lengthy route around controls 17, 26 and 16. Mr Willis managed to pass me twice around control 16, once on his way towards it, and once on his way back after failing to see it attached to a fairly unsubtle bridge.
With Steve's cries of "how did I miss that?!" in my ears I headed for an easy finish via controls 11 and 1. With cramp setting in, it was a bit of an exhausting sprint for the finish, but I was happy enough to come in with only a two point time penalty. The presence of the 'bike wash' was a wonderful addition and should be a mainstay at all NYMBO events!
A final score of 288 wasn't bad by my standards, roll on next month for more of the same.
