Event Report
NYMBO Update – April
Langdale & Broxa Forest MBO
I could almost copy last year's comments for Broxa as the weather was again superb after 2 dry weeks so that the tracks were much drier than anyone could expect after the winter we have had. Steve Roberts had planned an excellent course using the best tracks in both forests. Langdale is much better now that the 4x4 vehicles don't use it and Broxa offers some nice rideable singletracks as well as the superb descent into Whisperdale.
Thanks to Langdale End for an excellent village hall and nearby parking. Jens had drawn another very clear map and the helpers made everything run smoothly. No excuse for me to do much except enjoy my ride which I certainly did. It was also reassuring to be offered assistance near Fylingdales by every rider who passed as I was fixing a broken chain. The bike wash at Lowdales was very welcome until I turned up the filthy byway to #5 - and why do I always have to walk when I am already late!!
Andrew Windrum chose an excellent route but a puncture meant that he had to concede first place to Will Simmons who is going to take some beating this year. Richard Harrison also scored well but the fiercest competition was again in M50 where Julian Coulthard beat local expert Dave Evans with the 4th highest score of the day. Sheila Pierce was the highest scoring woman despite strong competition from Steph Fountain. Chris & Ralph Defty took the honours in the Mixed categories but the Martins had to accept second place in the Generation class behind the Evans. Seb Crane made the top 40 with 330 points to win the Youth class.
Sammy Wilson writes - With a sunny weekend on the cards, we set off on the road towards Scarborough along with what appeared to be every other car in Yorkshire. We weren't, however, heading for a day's relaxation on the beach - more of a day's hard work in the saddle at the second NYMBO event of the year. After an early start, I set off (as usual) in completely the wrong direction from the higher scoring route. Picking up 15 points at # 12, I entered the forest at the east side of the map and collected 50 points as well as taking in the excellent view of Scarborough at #7. I gave up on finding the bridleway up to # 29 and so instead visited #1 and 24, assisted with the gates by another friendly rider. It was nice to feel I was on a 'proper' bike when listening to the motocross riders nearby. I next travelled West to the other side of the map picking up 80 more points before 30 points at #27. Alarmingly close to the finish with a sizeable chunk of time remaining, I seemed to 'run out' of controls and could only manage a further 20 points before finishing with ten minutes to spare. Looking back over a welcome cold drink in the Moorcock Inn, I could easily have scored higher than 250. I did though, have an enjoyable ride and look forward to next month's event.
Lost property. 3 pairs of glasses (including a pair of reading glasses) were handed in so please let me know if they are yours. Thanks to the rider who handed in my pump - I had lent it to Andrew Windrum who then lost it before he could find me again!!
FC Charges The Forestry Commission have confirmed that they are doubling their charges from a £50 fee plus £1 per bike plus vat to a £100 fee plus £2 per bike plus vat. I think this is very unfair and our Chairman is still trying to negotiate a reduction at national level. What do you think? If they reduce the charge back to last year's level we can reduce the entry fee again as well - or are you happy paying the extra? Please let me know.
John Dixon had a bad crash in Silton Forest last week and won't be riding for a few months. He is back home but fractured his clavicle and scapula as well as tearing various ligaments in his shoulder. I hope he recovers in time to give David Day, Geoff Moorhouse and Dennis Jacques even tougher competition than they anticipated this season. Get well soon, John!!
