Event Report
Allerdale Bike Challenge Round 1 – Lorton 21st May 2014
The 2014 series is now underway and the weather gods have decided to support us again this year …or so it seems!
Riders enjoyed a warm, dry, sunny evening exploring the lanes around Lorton and Loweswater, whilst the fitter riders completed loop of Mosser fell and on out into the villages to the west of the A5096.
A record 73 riders ensured that there was good competition and some renewed rivalries. Meanwhile others simply enjoyed a pleasant ride enjoying the scenery and wonderful weather.
Chris Hope was top scorer on the night with a score of 187 just ahead of Richard Wren on 181. It all came down to the time penalties suggesting that there will be some rivalry in the events to come. Top lady of the night was Esther Sands riding in her first BikeO event as a mixed pair with Paul Nield. An impressive 158pts and 7th place overall. Kate Charles just sneaked in front of Philipa Liles to take the honours in the individual Ladies category with 140 points to finish16th despite losing 20 time penalty points.
The leading generation team was the Andrews family. Impressive rides from Rosie, Lucy and Amy left many of the adults, including their dad, a clean set of tyre tracks to finish in 38th place out of 54. Watch out for these young stars of the future!
Our apologies for the misplaced control 20 which was clearly on the wrong footpath. Control 6 also caused some confusion. It was placed on the footpath sign a few yards to the North of the road junction. The dot on the map covered both features which in hindsight allowed some ambiguity. Any riders who reported that they could not find either of these two controls were awarded the points. We are sorry if you wasted any time looking for them. We will do better!
The next event will revisit the Mill Inn at Dearham on the 4th June. Please try to enter on line as it saves you money and speeds up registration on the night. Starts will once again open at 5:30 and close at 6:30pm.
Food is being served in the pub until about 9pm.
Look forward to seeing you there…..cannot promise the weather though!
