Event Report
After Tony and Angela put on such a wonderful series of Bike O events last year, we thought it would only be right to give them a week off and a chance of a blast out on a bike themselves. But which date? Naturally we don’t like riding in the rain so we decided to pick the Wednesday when it was going to be wet. And so it was that we had very damp and moody conditions for the 40 riders who set off from The Old Mill Inn Dearham around the lanes and coast between Maryport, Gilcrux and Great Broughton.
Another strong performance from Richard Wren who managed to score 178. However, he was just squeezed out from top spot by Tony BB - also on 178 but in a time 25 seconds quicker. Good rides too from Alan Hartley and David Rawle. Kevin Hodgson, normally in a podium or Champions League spot, dropped back to 6th this time. Most likely a result that won’t count for this year’s league for Kevin at the final reckoning. More training needed on that fat bike!
A good ride once again for Esther Sands and Paul Nield – 166 points and 5th overall showing that they are going to be the couple to beat this year in the mixed (or any) pair category.
A steady score of 140 for Kate Charles means she is now out in front in the individual ladies competition. Kate picked a route which took in the bike track along the coast north from Maryport (controls 6 - 5 - 3) - probably the smoothest and fastest piece of tarmac in Cumbria! If you missed out on this section, we encourage you to try it out – it’s beautiful.
In the generation category, another close tussle between the Andrews’s and Blackley’s. Neck and neck on 90 points apiece. This one could go down to a single control on any one of the remaining events for the final league placings.
Many thanks to the landlord and staff at The Old Mill Inn Dearham – very hospitable, despite having to endure England’s miserable 2-2 draw with Ecuador and dripping wet cyclists.
Look forward to Round 3 at Uldale on 18/06/2014, where the sun will have his hat on once again.

Many thanks to H,K & M for offering us the chance to ride one of our own events. A very well planned and enjoyable challenge ....despite the weather. Never fear, we have 'booked' the sunshine for the Uldale event on the 18th June. Entries are open and we are looking forward to seeing you there. The cafe is opening especially for us and will have drinks cakes and a hot dish option for sale. Come and join in the crack!
Tony & Angela.
